Twitteratti
Self publishing is so normal an activity now that millions of people engage in it every day - through WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, blogs, personal websites, and even through dear old email. I do several if these things myself (though I refuse to join the twitteratti and risk making a global spectacle of myself like certain well-known figures). The difference between those who publish using these mega-popular media and the smaller number of folks who self-publish books is that books take much longer to write. That forces a discipline of thought, editing, and reconsideration that tends to weed out ill-considered, instant folly.
Unrepentant
However, once published, whether as paperback or eBook, the carefully crafted thoughts of anyone who isn't already known as a celebrity will struggle to be noticed amongst the flood of new publications that pour out onto the market each day. I am a confessed and unrepentant self-publisher whose books have been strongly endorsed and (the clearest praise) bought by existing readers to pass on to other potential readers. Yet, still, the sales totals of all my books amount to an insignificant proportion of the total numbers of books sold - even within the categories they fit. Is that a problem?
Thriving
There is a growing market in self-publishing, which now prefers to call itself 'independent publishing'. Driven by new technologies that enable books to be printed singly on demand, the sector is thriving - and a few titles within the sector do sell in respectable volumes, and even earn a living for their authors. My aim isn't to make a living from my writing. I do it because I can't help but write. It's a valid hobby. And I'm encouraged that some of my writings have encouraged people and helped them in their lives. It costs me money, despite the royalties, but I limit the expense by not rising to every media prompt to spend more money on advertising.
Scorn
Don't scorn self-publishers. Ideas that are written and circulated add to the global store of knowledge, wisdom, interest, and amusement that enriches our world.
